I did know that his nickname was related to his football career. He also played for the Baltimore Colts in 1949. It seems that many Hawaii Five-O actors led full and interesting lives with various different careers and also service to country. Must be that "Greatest Generation" thing again!

DID YOU KNOW?

Herman Wedemeyer received the nickname "Squirmin' Herman" while playing football at St. Mary's College in California. According to his Hall of Fame entry on the National Football Foundation, "Football historian Christy Walsh said, "...to watch him wiggle, squirm, tackle, pass, block, think and inspire his shaveless teammates to repeated victory over heavier, older and more experienced rivals...provokes amazement and praise."

He served in the Merchant Marine during World War II, then returned to St. Mary's to finish college. Upon graduating, he returned to Hawaii, where he served in the state legislature. There really was no stopping Our Duke.

Nice picture! Mr. Wedemeyer was there from episode 1. Quiet, steady, loyal, dependable. Like several regulars, he had a few different character names before he became Duke Lukela. Rest in peace.
