How to Have the Internet at Sea

It all began in 1957, when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the first satellite to orbit the earth. In 1963, the first two-way call was made between two heads of state, President John F. Kennedy and Prime Minister Abubakar Balewa of Nigeria. Ever since, efforts have been ongoing to make long-distance calls possible, and that led to long-distance Internet. How did they do it? Through the use of satellite communications (SATCOM). And to think it all enables us to communicate here, on RJL!

Read about it in the November-December 2023 issue of The Maritime Executive. Maritime Executive Digital Edition (maritime-executive.com), pp. 62 ff. It's a fascinating read!
