In 1942, Helen Hayes appeared with Gary Cooper in the film A Farewell to Arms. The movie was based on Ernest Hemingway's novel of the same name. Almost certainly, neither Mr. Cooper nor Miss Hayes thought they both would one day appear on screen with then-merchant mariner John Ryan, later to become known as actor Jack Lord.
Mr. Cooper appeared with Jack in The Court-Martial of Billy Mitchell (1955) and Man of the West(1958 ) after they became friends while discussing a Duesenberg automobile that sat on the showroom floor of the Cadillac dealership where Jack sold cars while breaking into acting.
Miss Hayes appeared on an episode of Hawaii Five-0 entitled "Retire in Sunny Hawaii . . . Forever" (Season 8 ) and was nominated for an Emmy Award for her performance.
Almost certainly, Miss Hayes' son, Jamie MacArthur, never dreamed that, one day, he would appear with Jack on one of television's most successful series, Hawaii Five-0.
It is, indeed, a small, small world.
A Farewell to Arms was remade in 1958, starring Rock Hudson and Jennifer Jones.
